As KRIS 6 News previously reported, House Bill 8 was signed into law in June 2023. Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Del Mar College Lenora Keas explained what the bill does in a short sentence, "HB8 pays colleges for students who complete an award or certificate."

In addition to hearing one of Broadway's latest and lesser known, but widely produced musicals, audiences will also have the chance to participate in Del Mar Drama's presentation of the "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," a musical comedy that follows the journeys of six quirky and driven young people who pursue the sport of the spelling bee.

High school students explored careers at Del Mar College with 'Opportunity Now' program organized by XP Synergy. The program helps students with disabilities learn critical life and work-readiness skills to help them grow and achieve their goals after finishing high school.

Free concert at Del Mar to feature retired faculty member, Philip Hii

"Fiesta! Philip Hii" on April 18 will be the farewell performance of a former Del Mar College educator who joined the music faculty in September of 1988 to teach future performers and educators of music. The celebratory concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Heritage Campus Richardson Performance Hall.

Women in industry share opportunities with high school students

On April 11, This One’s For the Gals hosted the 2024 Coastal Bend Women in Industry Conference in Robstown, inviting students to learn about careers in construction, energy and manufacturing. Students from 30 high schools attended the Coastal Bend conference. Among the conference’s volunteers were Del Mar College students Liv Garcia, Sam Marin and Mia Aguinaga, who all attended King High School where they participated in a dual credit welding program. Today, they are studying welding at the College.

Longtime Del Mar College professor remembered for more than his passion for teaching

Hundreds of people from all over the country are expected to attend funeral services for David Irving, Professor Emeritus of Music, who retired from Del Mar College in 2017. The dedicated educator who spent almost half a century teaching at the College not only had an ear for music -- he played various instruments ranging from the bass to the French horn -- but he also served as a mentor to generations of students during his 45 years as a music educator.

Del Mar College 'solarbrates' Total Solar Eclipse with watch party

Del Mar College students and employees gathered on the Heritage Campus to 'solarbrate' the total solar eclipse by hosting a watch party with many people gathered to witness the astonishing event. And to commemorate the event, organizers provided eclipse sunglasses, out-of-this-world music, and of course, we can't forget about eclipse-themed snacks like Starbursts, Milky Ways, Cosmic Brownies, Capri Suns and Sunkist soda.

Del Mar College's Diesel Applied Technology Program hosts SkillsUSA students

The SkillsUSA competition continued in Corpus Christi with students going over to Del Mar College's Windward Campus on April 5 for a diesel equipment technology challenge. For this competition hosted by DMC's Diesel Applied Technology Program, 19 students rotated between 13 stations, performing hands-on skills tests focusing on shop, electrical systems, hydraulics and more.

Beloved Del Mar College Music Professor David Irving passes away

Musicians across the Coastal Bend are mourning the loss of long time Del Mar College Music Professor David Irving, who passed away on Wednesday, April 3. Irving taught in theDMC Music Department for 45 years and was an expert in a wide range of subjects from jazz improvisation to the history of rock and roll. He had also previously taught at Ingleside and Mart as band director before becoming a faculty member with the College.

Governor Greg Abbott supporting Rockport-Fulton ISD future welders via grant

The future is bright for Rockport-Fulton High School welding students. Thanks to the school's welding shop, students get hands on experience and by next school year, the program will be revamped, thanks to a grant from the governor’s office. Del Mar College is also helping these future welders with the institution offering soon dual credit courses in welding.

State funds to boost Rockport-Fulton ISD welding program

This week, the Texas Workforce Commission presented the district with about $315,500 to support its welding career and technical education program through the commission's Jobs & Education for Texans grant. The grant will help the district serve over 125 students. The district worked with Del Mar College to review the grant proposal.

With new state funds in hand, community colleges waive tuition for some high school students

Texas community colleges know many high schoolers are skeptical of higher education because of the price tag. Some want to change that conversation by using new state dollars to waive tuition for some of their youngest students.Last fall, Del Mar College used $2 million of HB 8 funds to offer to participating ISDs and all their students tuition-free dual credit courses.

Coastal Bend students present findings on coastal environmental issues

Across the Coastal Bend, college and university student researchers inspired by coastal issues are studying environmental impacts on local ecosystems and how best to protect wildlife. On March 4, some of those students presented their environmental research during the Coastal Bend Bays Foundation's "Student March Madness" coastal issues forum, including Del Mar College Computer Science major Hector Marrero-Colominas, who presented his work to build an artificial intelligence model to better predict cold weather that can impact sea turtles.
