DMC announces spring 2020 launch of Personal Training Certification program

Article by: Michael Bratten

Addressing the growing popularity of personal training as a career path, Del Mar College is offering in spring 2020 a Personal Training Certification for those who want to enter the field or maintain their existing certification.

Registration is open now for the program, which includes 16 credit hours delivered in three eight-week sessions. It’s designed to prepare students to take any national personal training certification exam such as those given by the National Strength and Conditioning Association, American College of Sports Medicine and the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

For more information or to register, contact DMC’s Kinesiology Department at 361-698-1334 or go to https://bit.ly/2PVBX6O.

The program is great for anyone who aspires to be a fitness trainer at places such as Planet Fitness, Gold’s Gym, Freedom Fitness, Camp Gladiator or numerous others, as well as for those who want to work for themselves.

“To be a credible personal trainer, you need a certification, whether you work for a fitness center or for yourself,” said Judi Phillips, EdD, chair of the DMC Kinesiology Department. “If you’re already certified, you can come back and take some of these classes and get continuing education units to maintain that certification.”

Fitness trainers and instructors can earn a median salary of nearly $40,000 per year and over $19 per hour, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (https://bit.ly/36DCpNh). The job outlook through 2028 is projected to increase by 13 percent – much faster than average, the Bureau states.

Program courses consist of:

First eight-week session:

  • KINE 1164 Introduction to Physical Fitness and Wellness
  • FITT 1237 Personal Training
  • FITT 1301 Fitness and Exercise Testing

Second eight-week session:

  • FITT 2313 Exercise Science
  • KINE 1338 Concepts of Physical Fitness

Third eight-week session:

  • KINE 1306 First Aid
  • FITT 1164 Practicum

The short, 24-week duration is another attractive aspect of the Personal Training Certification program, Phillips said.

It’s very doable. We didn’t want to make it a long process to become certified. We want to help students get in, get certified and get a job as a personal trainer or continue with their education.
