DMC Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Chicas Rock founder Cecil Trevino de Oliviera and a few members will present a panel discussion on Sat., Sept. 28, in Del Mar College's Center for Economic Development as part of Hispanic Heritage Month events.

From Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, communities across the nation observe and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, recognizing the diversity, innumerable contributions and influence Hispanics have provided to shape this country. In observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, Del Mar College, the DMC Mexican American Studies program and the College’s chapter of the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education present the following events:

Saturday, September 14, through Tuesday, October 15
Del Mar College Hispanic Heritage Month Library Display

In observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, Del Mar College’s White Library will provide a display with book and films highlighting Hispanic authors, artists, political activists and filmmakers. The items are also available for library checkout with a valid Del Mar College ID.

Del Mar TV Airing of “Justice for my People: The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Story” 

Del Mar College will show “Justice for my People: The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Story” produced by KEDT-TV Public Television. The 90-minute documentary chronicles the life of Dr. Hector P. Garcia––Mexican Revolution refugee, medical doctor of the indigent, war veteran, civil rights activist and confidante of U.S. Presidents. Through peaceful protest and legal recourse, he confronted civil rights violators of his people. His fight is traced from Mathis, Texas, to Washington, D.C., and finally to the United Nations. All about a Wall: Trump’s Border Wall and South Texas

Dr. Adrian Clark, Associate Professor of Political Science at Del Mar College, will focus on issues connected with the proposed construction of a border wall in South Texas, the central issue for the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election. Topics include the reasons behind the importance of this issue in the context of the long-standing conflict over immigration in the United States, the changing demographics, difficulties the administration has experienced securing funding for the project and the implications and consequences the border wall would have for South Texas, in particular the environmental impact on the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge.

Panel Discussion with Cecy Treviño de Oliviera and Chicas Rock and Performance by Folklorico Dancer Teresa Saldivar

Executive director and founder of Chicas Rock Music Camp Cecy Treviño de Oliviera, along with a panel of Chicas Rock members, will give a presentation about the Chicas Rock Music Camp, followed by a discussion covering their experiences. Formed in 2011, Chicas Rock is exclusively for females and builds the members’ self-esteem through music creation and performance. Voted Local’s List favorites as well as one of the top three music schools in 2017 and 2018, Chick Rock float received a first place awards during the 2018 and 2019 Buccaneer Parades. The group organizes drives for school supplies and helps numerous organizations such as the Kids Helping Kids Program. A Q&A will follow the presentation. Additionally, Teresa Saldivar will perform Folklorico dances inspired by La Catrina, featured on La Loteria, and the Cumbia. Currently, Saldivar works for the Arts Museum of South Texas as the dance and drama teacher in the second grade program and is inspired by women singers and artists who have paved the way for a new generation of performers.

“Ojo, Susto and Curanderos: Young Adults’ Attitudes Toward Mexican-American Folk Healing in South Texas”

Dr. Christine Reiser Robbins, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, will discuss some key illness and healing elements in curanderismo or Mexican-American healing traditions. Drawing on oral histories and a recent study of college students in South Texas, the presentation will examine the extent to young adults today believe in and seek out folk healing practices, including their attitudes about common folk illnesses such as mal de ojo (evil eye) and susto (fright), and their familiarity with curanderos and other traditional healers. The study compares current results to a sample population 25 years ago to assess whether beliefs in curanderismo are rising or declining in contemporary society.

Presentations by Elena and Gerald Flores, Creators and Founders of Local Podcast, Sew Taco

Elena Flores, owner and founder of Sew Bonita and Loca for Local pop-up events, will share how her hobby turned into a business, a reflection of her obsession with every part of her Mexican culture. She loves to craft and create things that are bright, bold, beautiful and full of shine! Gerald Flores’ brand, Taco Gear, has an identity-wrapped focus exclusively on the taco. He began searching online for a shirt that would help him express his love for the taco and came up short. A graphic designer during the day, he created the perfect shirt. After posting the design on Instagram to his 150 followers, his account sprung to over 21K followers who share a love for all things tacos. Taco Gear became a brand. Together, the husband and wife duo founded and created Sew Taco, a local podcast.
