Innovative leader and educator delivering GED graduation keynote address

Article by: Michael Bratten

Graduation season generates excitement every year as students celebrate their academic accomplishments and move on to the next chapter in their lives, whether it involves entering the workforce or continuing their education.

No less proud are the students preparing to receive their high school equivalency certificates, as they overcame obstacles of all types to complete this major step toward a better life.

More than 130 students recently completed the high school equivalency program offered by Del Mar College’s Adult Education and Literacy Department (formerly the General Education Development or GED program). Of those, nearly 70 will walk the stage during a graduation ceremony scheduled for 7 p.m. this Thursday, June 21, in the College’s Richardson Performance Hall on the East Campus (Baldwin and Ayers).

Before they receive their certificates, graduates will hear an uplifting keynote address by Jonathan Grant Brown, an educator and program manager with AVID for Higher Education (AHE). Brown is an innovative leader in shifting the way business is done in higher education. Being a part of the change taking place in higher education institutions has given him the opportunity to collaborate with internal stakeholders and engage students on a level that empowers them to take ownership of their learning.

Brown earned a bachelor’s degree in communications and a master’s in education from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in Odessa. As someone who has benefited from a collection of talented educators, he has dedicated his life to helping students and educators alike become exceptional in their pursuit of a successful future.

AHE is a nonprofit that works with two-year and four-year colleges and universities to implement a holistic approach to accelerating student success. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) provides customized coaching and professional learning for faculty and staff alike that integrates with and accelerates student success initiatives already underway on a campus.
