Music Department Holding "Drive-in" Sing-along in RPH Parking Lot on Oct 27

Innovative event designed to create musical camaraderie with familiar songs

Article by Melinda Eddleman

Among many things the COVID-19 pandemic has either curtailed or altered how they’re offered over the past seven months are local cultural events that bring people together. For Corpus Christi residents feeling cooped-up and needing a diversion, the Del Mar College Music Department has a solution––a “Drive-in” Choir Parking Lot Sing-Along.

Holding the sing-along as a ‘drive-in’ format is a first for the Music Department. This event is an innovative way to bring music to the community in a manner that reunites people and invokes a sense of familiarity by singing together … safely, of course.
Dr. Greg Graff, Assistant Professor of Music and Choral Director

Songs you might find familiar are “Over the Rainbow,” “The Brady Bunch” sitcom theme, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” “Lean on Me,” “It’s a Small World After All,” “It Had To Be You” and many others. The total list of 18 songs that Graf and DMC Choir students, who will remain in their vehicles and will lead, is available on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/events/765966137317045/?active_tab=discussion.

(Copyright laws prevent the distribution of lyrics, but participants can find them elsewhere online.)

The musical camaraderie begins at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, in the parking lot next to Richardson Performance Hall on the College’s East Campus (Kosar at Ayers and Baldwin). Parking spaces are limited. Safety and health protocols will be followed, including social distancing (even between vehicles) and use of required face coverings (masks or face shields).

For more information, contact Graf at ggraf2@delmar.edu or the DMC Music Office at 698-1211 or music@delmar.edu.
