Putnam County Spelling Bee VN Art

Weekends, April 12-13, 18-20 and 26-27
M-U-S-I-C-A-L  C-O-M-E-D-Y … Del Mar Drama's Production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” in Sue Sellors Finley Theatre

Can you spell “musical comedy?” April marks the first time since 2018 that Del Mar Drama has produced a musical. And, for a three-weekend run, audiences can laugh and spell during the Broadway musical comedy, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” scheduled April 12-13, 18-20 and 26-27 in the Sue Sellors Finley Theatre on the Heritage Campus. Rated PG-13 for mature content, all performances begin at 7:30 p.m. The Tony Award-winning musical follows six quirky adolescent contestants and three moderators at a spelling bee in the regionally ambiguous Putnam County. As the bee progresses, audience members will learn about the characters’ lives and backstories through songs and montages during this coming-of-age story with as much heart as humor. “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” isn’t a typical musical as the line between audience and performers is frequently crossed, putting patrons’ spelling skills to the test against key characters’ abilities and making each performance unique. Online ticket sales (delmardrama.ludus.com/) begin Friday, March 29, with day-of-show ticket purchases available with the Box Office opening one hour prior to each performance. The April 12 opening features a cash bar and post-production reception. Additionally, April 18 (Thursday) is Student Night when any local student with a valid student I.D. can attend the performance for free, along with a post-production reception in the lobby.

• Weekends, April 12-13, 18-20 and 26-27, 7:30 p.m., Del Mar Drama production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program Services by Del Mar College Accounting Students

It’s time to file income taxes, again. And, for many Coastal Bend filers, trying to make sense of the different forms or changes in tax credits can be a struggle. Furthermore, paying for an accountant to prepare returns may not be part of the budget. However, as part of the program supported by the United Way of the Coastal Bend, Del Mar College students trained in tax and accounting software can make the tax season a little less stressful for area filers by providing FREE services through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. As a nationwide program established by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the VITA Program involves volunteers who prepare tax returns free for individuals who make $60,000 per year or less. Services at DMC are scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through April 11 in Room 206 in the Venters Business Building on the Heritage Campus. Appointments are not necessary, so walk-ins are welcome.  Filers need to bring tax information, including their W-2 form, other documentation of earned income, Social Security cards for everyone being claimed on the return and a form of identification, such as a Drivers License or other photo I.D. For a full checklist of what to bring and other information, visit the United Way of the Coastal Bend’s VITA page at www.uwcb.org/vita.

• Tuesdays and Thursdays, now through April 11, 2 to 6 p.m., Free VITA Program income tax filing services.
