                        <title>No Ordinary Game ... Turkey Bowl Is Back!</title>

The game returned for a new era on Oct. 24 and with a new name … the “Turkey Bowl.”</span><br><br><span>But this gridiron battle for bragging rights and claiming the customized Turkey Bowl trophy was more than just a game.                         <title>Successful “One Stop Saturday” Leading DMC Vikings to New Academic Year</title>

                        <title>TexPREP Holds Another Banner Summer Camp for Area Young Geniuses</title>

                        <guid>https://vikingnews.delmar.edu/texprep-holds-another-banner-summer-camp-for-area-young-geniuses/</guid><pp:caseid>717848</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Symbolic logic, problem solving, physics and linear coding ... those are subjects you don’t normally think sixth and seventh graders would spend time covering during the first part of their summer break. In fact, those subjects sound more like what upper-level high school or college students would take during summer semester courses.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>But for nearly 50 area middle school youth, that’s exactly how they’ve spent the past six weeks as participants with Del Mar College’s Texas Prefreshman Engineering Program or TexPREP.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>The annual summer camp is free and offered through an application process to students demonstrating strong academic aptitude, especially in mathematics.</span><br><br><span>TexPREP is a statewide initiative that began in 1979 at The University of Texas at San Antonio to encourage middle school- through early high school-age students to pursue studies and careers in fields related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Overall, 926 DMC Vikings earned 1,137 associate’s degrees and certificates combined with 695 individuals who participated during the ceremony.                         <title>History Professor Dr. Bryan Stone Receives &quot;Piper Professor&quot; Award</title>

Students in the faculty member’s class, HIST 1302 U.S. History 1865 to Present, looked a little perplexed.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;"><span>But, the purpose became clear when College officials presented Dr. Stone with a certificate designating him a 2024 “Piper Professor,” along with a $5,000 honorarium check and commemorative gold pin. For the majority of these students, the event was the first time they stepped foot on a college campus or learned about the different possibilities that await them.</span></p><p><span>Students from 29 regional high schools met with faculty and current DMC Vikings, saw equipment and technology used to prepare individuals for rewarding and successful careers, visited with representatives from various DMC services offices and became familiar with the Windward Campus.</span></p><p><span>Spring 2024 Discover Del Mar incuded participation from more than 50 DMC academic, Continuing Education and Corporate Services programs from among the College’s pathways and departments so that students could determine what opportunities fit their interests but also align with workforce needs in the Coastal Bend.</span></p><p><span>Del Mar College is YOUR “community” college, so come discover us!</span></p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[Del Mar College,DMC-TV,exclude,TV]]></category>

                        <title>Welding Program Receives $8,000 Check from Texas Chemistry Alliance</title>

The presentation took place at the Metals Technology Building on the Windward Campus, and the funds were raised during TCA’s Sweethearts and Shotguns Clay Shoot held at Bevly Farms on Feb; 23 that included participation by DMC Welding representatives. In early May, &nbsp;the College held its 70th Annual Recognition Ceremony with participants walking the stage in Richardson Performance Hall to receive their awards.</span></p><p><span>As part of the event, two students were inducted into the prestigious DMC Hall of Fame.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>As a time-honored tradition since 1949, this year’s two Hall of Fame inductees are psychology major <strong>Sofia Jimenez</strong> and <strong>Nichaela L. Shaheen</strong>, a public relations and advertising major. Students are selected for their scholarship, leadership and participation in student organizations. Flores noted that the mutual encouragement between her and her mother fueled their choice to come back to school. After taking together the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS), which is a standardized examination for&nbsp;students applying for nursing school&nbsp;in the United States, they began the College’s nursing program simultaneously.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="text-align:left;">On May 20, the two walked the stage at the American Bank Center to graduate together as part of the Spring Class of 2022.&nbsp;</p><p><span>The mother-daughter duo reflect on the incredible success they’ve achieved together.&nbsp;</span></p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[exclude,TV,Del Mar College]]></category>

Where farm fields, chicken coops and livestock used to reside, the College held a Southside Campus Project Celebration on Dec. 2 on the 96-acre site where the campus will sit at Yorktown Boulevard and Rodd Field Road. This year marks the third time the DMC Foundation has held the rappelling fundraiser and raised a combined $188,000 after holding events in 2017 and 2018. TPCO American&rsquo;s Gregory, Texas-based plant, which produces seamless steel pipe, delivered 58 metric tons of pipe to the College&rsquo;s West Campus that will now be used as a training resource. We think things are going to go a certain way and then the unexpected happens. On July 13, Traci Boenau found out that her husband, Edward wouldn't be able to walk alongside her to get the degrees they'd worked towards for years. Afterward, she thought about taking an understandable break from college. Yet in the days after she remembered the words of her husband, "You don't have time to quit. We are doing this for each other and the kids. Failure is not an option". With those words and a portrait of her husband, Traci persevered. On August 16 she walked across the stage receiving her associate's degree in teaching and her husband's degree in business.</span></p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[Del Mar College,TV,exclude,DMC-TV,Upside]]></category>
