“One Stop Saturday participants were lined up out the door at the Harvin Student Center on our Heritage Campus, and DMC faculty and staff demonstrated their commitment to ensure everyone received the attention needed to get started as a new Viking or to continue their journey toward completing their goals this fall,” said Gracie Martinez, the college’s Dean of Student Outreach and Enrollment Services, adding: “We weren’t about to leave until every participant received the services needed to begin classes later this month.”

But for nearly 50 area middle school youth, that’s exactly how they’ve spent the past six weeks as participants with Del Mar College’s Texas Prefreshman Engineering Program or TexPREP.

The annual summer camp is free and offered through an application process to students demonstrating strong academic aptitude, especially in mathematics.

TexPREP is a statewide initiative that began in 1979 at The University of Texas at San Antonio to encourage middle school- through early high school-age students to pursue studies and careers in fields related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Del Mar College introduced TexPREP to its summer youth programming in 2000. 

The program’s longevity has been made possible by the 13-year lead sponsorship from Flint Hills Resources with overall donations reaching nearly $300,000.

The event was more than just a fall festival and incorporated carnival games, the Día de los Muertos Welding Competition, a car show, credit program demonstrations and displays and much more!

But, the purpose became clear when College officials presented Dr. Stone with a certificate designating him a 2024 “Piper Professor,” along with a $5,000 honorarium check and commemorative gold pin. The recognition comes from the San Antonio-based Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation with nominations for the pinnacle of Texas higher education awards submitted by invitation only.

On March 22, Del Mar College hosted its annual “Discover Del Mar” event with over 1,100 Coastal Bend high school students converging on the Windward Campus to learn more about what career paths and training is available to them at DMC. For the majority of these students, the event was the first time they stepped foot on a college campus or learned about the different possibilities that await them.

Students from 29 regional high schools met with faculty and current DMC Vikings, saw equipment and technology used to prepare individuals for rewarding and successful careers, visited with representatives from various DMC services offices and became familiar with the Windward Campus.

Spring 2024 Discover Del Mar incuded participation from more than 50 DMC academic, Continuing Education and Corporate Services programs from among the College’s pathways and departments so that students could determine what opportunities fit their interests but also align with workforce needs in the Coastal Bend.

But, before the students who participated during the College’s traditional graduation event  and “walked the stage,” new City of Corpus Christi Fire Chief Brandon Wade presented the keynote address.

Those students include Ethan Sullivan, who as a Drama major received the Sue Sellors Finley Endowed Scholarship ; Amanda Wright, a Process Technology major who received the Chemours Future of Chemistry Scholarship; and Tabitha Turner, a Physical Therapist Assistant major who received both the Matthew & Sarah Busby Family Scholarship and the Ella & Gene Bouligny Endowed Scholarship.

Each year, the DMC Foundation brings scholarship recipients face-to-face with their benefactors to provide the opportunity for students to thank their donors and share their stories and the life-changing impact scholalarships have on their lives.

Jenna's journey began at DMC, where she honed her culinary skills and learned the art of baking. Today, she's the mastermind behind a bakery that whips up some of the most irresistible sweets in town. 

And, guess what? Jenna and her employees are not just baking for fun. They were part of Coastal Bend Restaurant Week 2023. Swing by to savor their scrumptious creations and support local talent.

The Aug. 17 pinning ceremony marked the first milestone with the RN to BSN Program completers getting their pins. And, on Aug 19, these individuals marked a second milestone when they walked the stage in Corpus Christi’s Selena Auditorium to receive their bachelor’s degree during the DMC Summer 2022 commencement ceremony.

In the video below, three of the 14 graduates share their perspectives about why they chose to earn their bachelor's degree at Del Mar College:

The RN to BSN Program is the College’s first bachelor’s degree program, which started in fall 2021. DMC marked a major milestone as the 14 bachelor’s degree recipients not only participated in the pinning ceremony but also walked the stage during the Summer 2022 Commencement Ceremony in Selena Auditorium on Aug. 19.

As part of the event, two students were inducted into the prestigious DMC Hall of Fame. 

As a time-honored tradition since 1949, this year’s two Hall of Fame inductees are psychology major Sofia Jimenez and Nichaela L. Shaheen, a public relations and advertising major. Students are selected for their scholarship, leadership and participation in student organizations. These two students join the ranks of nearly 420 inductees who have set the bar for becoming Hall of Fame honorees.

On May 20, the two walked the stage at the American Bank Center to graduate together as part of the Spring Class of 2022. 

The mother-daughter duo reflect on the incredible success they’ve achieved together.
