2017 National Art Show Features 93 Works that Include Three Submitted by DMC Studio Art Major

Attracting some of the most creative contemporary American artists from across the country, Del Mar College (DMC) first launched the annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show in 1966. On Friday, Feb. 17, the College’s Art and Drama Department will host an opening reception for their 51st National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show in celebratory style.
“This exhibition will provide a visually stimulating experience for students, faculty, staff and the community,” says Kenneth Rosier, DMC professor of art and department chair. “The Art Program also takes special pride in noting that current Del Mar studio art student Alex Van Zandt has three drawings in this exhibition.”
“Juror Carlos Llerena Aguirre, an internationally recognized printmaker and filmmaker, selected a diverse and compelling exhibition, which represents artists from 24 states,” adds Rosier.
This year’s exhibition is fairly large, made up of 93 works that include 54 drawings, prints and mixed media works and 39 sculpture pieces.
The opening reception begins at 6 p.m. in the Joseph A. Cain Memorial Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Center on Del Mar College’s East Campus on Ayers Street. Along with great art, the event features hors d’ oeuvres, a cash bar and music until 8 p.m. Admission to the reception and exhibition is free. During the reception, curators will reveal three award winners, including the $1,000 DMC Permanent Collection Award, $2,000 Joseph A. Cain Memorial Award and $2,000 DMC White Library Award.
The national show will remain on display through May 5. Regular gallery hours are 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. until noon on Fridays.
