Art Program Presents Invitational Exhibit Featuring Different Perspectives of Local and South Texas Artists

Article by: Rosa Linda Reynoso

It’s a matter of perspective. Del Mar College’s newest art exhibit, Mexican-American Perspectives 2017: My casa is your casa, provides different richly depicted perspectives by local and surrounding South Texas artists. Presented by the College’s Art Program with the Art and Drama Department, the exhibit highlights over 30 original prints in the Joseph A. Cain Memorial Art Gallery.

“My casa is your casa shows the scope and range of individual expression,” says Amorette V. Garza, associate professor of art. “While the invited artists are of Mexican-American heritage, their expressions range from directly referencing their heritage and a place of acculturation to making no direct reference at all.”

The exhibit opens with a free reception scheduled 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15. The event includes hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and music. Cain Gallery is in the Fine Arts Center located on the East Campus at Ayers Street and Baldwin Blvd. For more information about the reception or exhibit, call the DMC Art Office at 698-1216.

My casa is your casa runs through Hispanic Heritage Month and aims to showcase the talent, experiences and diversity of artistic expression with a reflective range of the human experience and what artists share to help embrace and celebrate diversity.

Anyone visiting the gallery can expect to see a variety of works, including Joe Pena’s Backyard Reliquary, Ricardo Ruiz’s El Torito de la Copita and Mayra Zamora’s Calavera Talavera. Among other invited artists are Cande Aguilar, Jorge Alegria, Fernando Andrade, Jerry Cobarruvias, Amorette V. Garza, Sandra Gonzalez, Nola Guajardo, Ben Herrera, Gerald Lopez, Jimmy Pena, Rolando Reyna, Mauricio Saenz, Ashley Thomas and Nora Verdin.

Mexican-American Perspectives 2017: My casa is your casa is on display through Friday, Dec. 5. Admission is free with Cain Gallery open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays.
