Did you know that 76 percent of Americans do not have an estate plan according to a 2025 Caring.com study? Creating a will helps protect loved ones, provides peace of mind and offers those planning their estate an opportunity to support causes that matter most to them. And if you “Google” to see what the average cost is to seek advice and services to create a will, the expense can range between $1,000 to $5,000.
The Del Mar College Foundation has a solution.
As part of National Estate Planning Awareness Week, which is Oct. 19-25, the DMC Foundation is offering a free estate planning service in partnership with FreeWill, a legally valid online tool that provides individuals an easy way to create a will in about 20 minutes. The service is available at partner.freewill.com/dmcfoundation, allowing individuals to generate a legally valid estate plan at no cost that protects their family and records their wishes.
And current DMC Foundation supporters can register their existing gift at partner.freewill.com/record/dmcfoundation.
National Estate Planning Awareness Week is a good reminder that we all should plan ahead for the people who count on us, and the Foundation’s goal is to provide this valuable service to our community while encouraging thoughtful gift planning to benefit loved ones and charities of your choice.
He adds, “A gift in your will to a nonprofit organization such as the Del Mar College Foundation will cost nothing but will have a lasting impact on educating our community for many generations to come.”
Individuals who choose to include Del Mar College in their estate plans will be recognized as members of the DMC Foundation’s new Legacy Del Mar Society, honoring their commitment to creating educational opportunities for future students.
Since 1983, the DMC Foundation’s mission has focused on providing scholarships, supporting educational programs and removing barriers for community members to reach their unrealized potential.
The “no cost” benefit of using FreeWill is possible due to support from hundreds of nonprofit partners. Users’ wills are valid in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and the site utilizes guidance from expert attorneys. According to Free Will, the site encrypts all data, does not store sensitive information such as Social Security numbers and meets strict safety standards set forth by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
The DMC Foundation partnered with FreeWill to simplify the process for supporters to help sustain Del Mar College’s educational opportunities for community members for years to come.
“Our partnership makes this kind of gift-giving easy while allowing our forward-thinking supporters to create a lasting impact while joining others as part of the Foundation’s Legacy Del Mar Society,” Busby says, noting that anyone can give through the FreeWill site whether they’re alumni, current or retired employees or any community member who believes in the power of education.
