Del Mar Drama Opening on Nov. 5 First Fall Production in Two Years with Playwright Annie Bakers’ “Circle Mirror Transformation”

Article by: Rosa Linda Reynoso

They’re back! It’s their first production since 2019 with the last play performed in March 2020 when the whole world came to a standstill.

As their fall 2021 production, Del Mar Drama presents playwright Annie Baker’s “Circle Mirror Transformation,” a story about five strangers who take a summer acting class at a community center. Led by their instructor, Marty, their hidden secrets and frustrated desires are revealed.

The production runs two weekends, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5-6, and Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 11-13. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Sue Sellors-Finley Theatre, which is located in the Fine Arts Center along Ayers Street on Del Mar College’s Heritage Campus.

Tickets are $10 general admission; $6 for seniors, military and DMC employees and $3 for DMC students with a valid ID. Box office opens one hour prior to each performance. Advance tickets are available online at www.delmardrama.ludus.com.

“Circle Mirror Transformation” is recommended for ages 14 and older due to some mature language and mildly suggestive content.

For more information about the production, contact Del Mar Drama at 698-1216 or drama@delmar.edu.

Due to COVID-19, open seating for this performance is limited to accommodate social distancing. Groups attending the performance together may sit together. Del Mar College encourages patrons to wear masks or face coverings but does require individuals to follow other safety protocols in place under DMC’s s Return-to-Campus Plan, which is now in Phase 3.

Baker’s masterpiece, “Circle Mirror Transformation,” takes audiences on a journey from the dull into the extreme. Five strangers from the small Vermont town of Shirley gather in a dance studio to embark on a unique journey together in a creative six-week-long community-center drama class for adults.

Taught by Marty, their free-spirited and supportive leader, the group moves through a series of acting exercises, ranging from heartbreaking to ridiculous. The “students” include Schultz, a recently divorced, emotionally vulnerable carpenter; Teresa, an earnest and vibrant former actress; James, Marty’s quiet and genial husband; and Lauren, a reserved and self-conscious high schooler.

So, what will result from their lessons together?

In one small room through a few seemingly trivial games, quiet wars are waged, emotional wounds are nursed and healing is finally, but slowly able to begin.
