“Immigration from Mexico to South Texas in the Early 20th Century” Lecture

Del Mar College will show a lecture by Dr. James Klein, Del Mar College professor of history, who discusses why immigration into South Texas from Mexico accelerated in the first three decades of the 20th century. Individuals and families were drawn to South Texas by employment prospects related to the region’s developing market economy. Mexican laborers in Nueces County and South Texas generally labored under harsh circumstances as recruiters and landowners took advantage of migrants. The World War I experience taught landowners the benefits of organizing; and in subsequent years, they formed new organizations to further their interests…often at the expense of their migrant laborers. Mexican laborers responded to their disadvantaged situation as best they could and strove to improve their work conditions in South Texas by seeking better employment elsewhere when possible. This showing is part of Hispanic Heritage Month observances at Del Mar College. For updated trailers and programming events, visit the DMC-TV Facebook page at www.facebook.com/DMCTVcc/.
