DMC Foundation’s Over The Edge Fundraiser Providing Thrill Seekers Opportunity to Rappel for Scholarships

Article by: Melinda Eddleman

The Del Mar College Foundation’s next event is a first for Corpus Christi, taking the organization’s scholarship fundraising activities to new heights. The Foundation has partnered with Over The Edge Global, a special events company that provides signature events for nonprofit organizations around the world with business leaders, individuals and community members invited to raise donations in exchange for the experience of going “over the edge” and rappelling down a prominent Shoreline Blvd. building.

On June 27, the Foundation announced the beginning of Over The Edge fundraising activities at the Holiday Inn Corpus Christi Downtown Marina, where individuals who raise at least $1,000 over the next four months will rappel down 20 stories from the hotel’s rooftop.

The goal is to raise at least $100,000 for Del Mar College student scholarships.

“Scholarships are the number one priority of the Del Mar College Foundation because scholarships mean access to quality education for our local citizens,” said Mary McQueen, CFRE and Executive Director of Development and the Foundation. “Being able to raise this important support for local students through such a fun and innovative special event just adds to the joy of helping deliver those dreams of a better life for individuals and their families.”

The Over The Edge urban adventure challenges thrill seekers to take their support to new heights for DMC students. No climbing or rappelling experience is necessary for this event … just enough courage to go “over the edge” and rappel down 200 feet.

During the announcement, Dr. Mark Escamilla, Del Mar College President, noted, “This fundraising event is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for those who seek adventure. Most importantly, Over The Edge participants will change the lives of our students by raising scholarship funds that deliver their dreams.”

The Foundation hopes to sign up at least 76 participants. Rappelling down the Holiday Inn Downtown Marina is scheduled for Oct. 20-21.

“I could not wait to step up and be the first rappeller to sign up for this worthy cause,” said C. Michelle Unda, a DMC alumna and Foundation Trustee who serves as a Public Affairs Representative for NuStar Energy, L.P. “I hope to see everyone at the top, ready to go over the edge.”

Adventurous thrill seekers can sign up anytime between now and October to raise funds toward their rappelling opportunity. Participants will set up their own donation page where family, friends and colleagues can donate funds using social media.
