DMC Students to Determine Viking’s Name in November After Bracket System Narrows Down Selections

Article by: Melinda Eddleman

In April, the Viking landed at Del Mar College (DMC). Now, he needs a name that his College friends and fans can use to invite him out for pizza or to lead a campus tour. Born deep in Scandinavia, the name his family gave him has 15 letters, all consonants; and it’s impossible to pronounce in English or Spanish.

So, he’s turning to the DMC campus community and public to help him adopt a new name for his new home in the Texas Coastal Bend. The Viking and Del Mar College invite everyone––including students, faculty, staff, alumni and Coastal Bend residents––to submit names online beginning today, Sept. 11.

“Opening the nomination process to the public is a great way to build even stronger relationships across the Coastal Bend since The Viking is our ambassador with duties to help build a college-going culture among the communities we serve,” says Dr. Rito Silva, Vice President of DMC Student Affairs. “Del Mar College wants to share with area residents the opportunity to provide names that our students can consider for our new emissary, who will represent the College for many years to come.”

The College will take nominations through 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30. To nominate names, visit www.delmar.edu/nametheviking.

The contestant with the winning name will receive a $1,000 Viking Card (debit card) to use toward services at Del Mar College, including campus dining, fine arts events, books, tuition and more. Or, the winner can even donate to the DMC Foundation Scholarship Fund!

What are the guidelines?

1) Participants can submit as many names as they wish,

2) Nominations will be time-stamped. If more than one person submits a name that makes the voting bracket, the first person making the nomination will be considered the contestant.

3) A committee––including DMC campus community, alumni and general community members––will review and narrow the nominations down to the top 16 names.

4) Voting using brackets will open to DMC STUDENTS ONLY with each listing in the student newspaper, The Foghorn, and their website (www.foghornnews.com/).

Bracket listings for student voting will be scheduled in The Foghorn on Oct. 9 (top 16), Oct. 23 (top 8), Nov. 6 (top 4) and Nov. 13 (last day to vote for one name).

Del Mar College will reveal The Viking’s new name during a major event the week of final voting. The winning contestant will receive their prize, the other 15 bracket contestants will be recognized and The Viking will have a new name!
