DPS Third Party Skills Testing Program Makes Getting CDL Faster Process Through Transportation Training Services

Article by: Melinda Eddleman

The Del Mar College (DMC) Transportation Training Services Program’s participation with the Texas Department of Public Safety’s new Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Third Party Skills Testing Program will move students through the certification process faster. As of May 12, the College is an approved site for the new initiative to provide CDL examinations onsite on behalf of DPS.

“May 17 is a special day because of a couple of firsts,” says John Rojas, director of Del Mar’s Transportation Training Services Program. “Four students just completed our program’s training, and we’re administering the first examinations today for the DPS so these students can receive their CDLs.”

Rojas also notes that the College’s training program is the first in South Texas to offer examinations through the DPS Third Party Skills Testing Program.

For students, the new initiative means they won’t have to wait an additional four to eight weeks for testing to receive certification and their CDLs after attending the College’s program over a three- to four-week period. They also won’t have to schedule their vehicle inspection and driving tests at the local DPS Office since certified DMC instructors can give the exams at the West Campus trucking yard.

Del Mar can now provide the exams and enter the results into the DPS system, showing that students successfully passed their tests. Those individuals can then pay and pick up their state-issued CDLs at the local DPS Drivers License Office.

Currently, one instructor, Rodolfo Rosas, has completed 100 percent of training and is certified to give the DPS tests. Two more, Rojas and Edwardo Saenz, will complete the certification process next month.

“Overall, we plan to have five to six instructors certified by the end of the year,” says Rojas, adding:

“Prior to this initiative, DMC students were subjected to extreme scheduling delays to complete their certification exams, which further delayed their seeking employment opportunities. Since the trucking industry continues to experience a large demand for qualified CDL drivers, employers are very happy with the State approving the Third Party Skills Testing Program and Del Mar College as a testing site.”
