Hook, line and sinker … big catch means big win for students during “Stringers for Scholarships” Fishing Tournament June 7-8

Article by: Melinda Eddleman

Hook, line and sinker … that big catch can land anglers the top prize and help Del Mar College (DMC) students at the same time, so it’s time to fish for a cause––student scholarships! The DMC Foundation and LNV Inc., a local engineering, architecture and surveying company, are partnering once again to host the sixth annual “Stringers for Scholarships” fishing tournament June 7-8 to raise funds that can help students achieve their dreams.

We are so grateful for the generosity of community partners who recognize the importance of supporting our students through much-needed scholarship funds. Our Stringers for Scholarships fishing tournament is a great place for businesses in the community to come together and spend the day fishing for a great cause - education!
Mary McQueen, Executive Director of Development/DMC Foundation

For the 2018-2019 academic year, the DMC Foundation awarded over $1.7 million in scholarships to more than 1,600 students.

The two-day event opens with a Captain’s Party from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 7, at Marker 37 (13317 South Padre Island Drive) with food, drinks a sneak peek at raffle items and a Calcutta-style auction. At least one team member must attend this event to pick up packets with tournament rules, goodie bags and other items.

The tournament includes guided and non-guided divisions.

Fishing runs from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 8. Angler weigh-in is between 1 and 3 p.m., and contestants must be in line by 3 p.m. to get their fish weighed.

Individual awards for first, second and third place will be given for the following categories: heaviest single speckled trout, heaviest single redfish and heaviest flounder. A single team award will be given for the heaviest stringer not to exceed two trout, one redfish and one flounder. The event also features side pot payouts for an additional fee at registration.

Entry fee per individual is $100 and $400 for teams of four. Access registration and additional information about available sponsorships and other details at www.delmar.edu/foundation/index.html and click the “Stringers for Scholarships” button.
