Music Major Alexandra Flint Among 15 Students Across Texas Selected to Receive TAMS Scholarship

The Texas Association of Music Schools (TAMS) has selected Del Mar College (DMC) student Alexandra Flint as a recipient of the Clara Freshour Nelson Music Scholarship. Flint competed against community college students from across the state, including private and public four-year universities, for the scholarship with 15 students receiving awards overall.
The scholarship will support Flint’s music studies through completion of her baccalaureate degree. She plans to graduate from the College’s Music Department in summer 2018. The total amount of the scholarship is $1,500 per semester for eight semesters.
During the selection process, the Scholarship Selection Committee also elected Flint as one of three students to perform a brief solo at the 2018 TAMS conference banquet scheduled in January in Austin.
This is such an honor, and I am so very proud of Alexandra. To my knowledge, she is the very first to perform at TAMS from Del Mar and only the second Clara Freshour Nelson Scholarship recipient from the College.
Shortly after moving to South Texas and while still attending high school, Flint began studying with Dr. David Sutanto, DMC professor of piano. She continued her studies at the College after graduating.
The instruction I’m receiving at Del Mar is excellent, and as I prepare to transfer and complete my bachelor’s degree, I feel confident and prepared to begin attending a larger university. Students at Del Mar also receive a level of individualized instruction from their professors that can be difficult to find at larger universities.
Flint says that the College’s Music Department is unique in the quality of the music faculty. She adds that the professors are highly accomplished, and many of them are recognized internationally as fine musicians.
