New Continuing Education Construction Skills Training Program Starting in February

Program addresses high-demand skills needed for Coastal Bend area's construction industry

For individuals interested in learning the skills needed to secure a successful career in the construction industry in the Coastal Bend, Del Mar College (DMC) Continuing Education is offering Construction Skills Training program. Participants can prepare for high-demand industry occupations such as dry walling, woodworking, house wiring and plumbing.

The DMC Construction Skills Training program offer multi-trades courses in several aspects of construction and includes Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10- and 30-Hour Construction courses that cover basic concepts of safety and health as they relate to the construction industry. Participants completing the courses will receive a Department of Labor OSHA 10- or 30-Hour Construction course completion card.

DMC courses serve as an excellent way to get a quick handle on trade basics, are affordable and taught within two to 16 weeks by experienced instructors so that completers are work- and career-ready. Hands-on training includes:

  • carpentry and framing,
  • cabinetry covering design and construction of base and wall cabinets for kitchens and bathrooms,
  • house wiring covering conductors, switches, outlet, and basic house wiring, including electrical fixtures and their installation,
  • trim and stairs including installation of stairs, door, window, floor and ceiling trim,
  • plumbing along with soldering, brazing, pipe material, fittings, plumbing fixtures and their installation,
  • drywall and interior finishes,
  • print reading that covers the fundamentals of blueprint reading, and
  • beginning woodworking, which includes the use of hand and power tools with an emphasis on safety.

Whether participants are just starting out or are already in the construction industry, the hands-on instructional combination the DMC Construction Skills Training program provides will give students knowledge and abilities needed to secure a successful career.
