Article by Melinda Eddleman

Need something to keep your foot tapping while you work? Check out the Sound Recording Technology Program’s cover version of “Whip It” by the 1980s icon band DEVO, known for their new wave, synth-pop sound.

Dr. Paul Bissell, Professor and Director of the program in the DMC Music Department, says the initial tracks for this project were completed the week before Spring Break 2020, “literally 48 hours before the world shut down, and we never came back to campus.”

He noted that the video was supposed to be a class project last year, but it came to a halt when a this is the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country.

“So, this January when we finally got back into the studio in a partial way, I thought it would be good to go ahead and finish the project,” he noted. “We added the vocals after waiting almost a full year.”

The audio track for this creative cover version of “Whip It” includes DMC graduate and drummer Josh Singleterry, lead vocalist Antony Lametrie, Dr. Bissell and others.

The SRT “Whip It” cover version features dance sequences and cameos. See whom you can spot from the campus community! ENJOY!

Another audio project features Lametrie’s vocals and DMC faculty playing brass in the SRT’s cover version of Tavares’ 1975 Top 10 hit, “It Only Takes A Minute.”

Of this project, Dr. Bissell said, “Antony’s vocals are ‘off the hook.’”
