“Stringers for Scholarships” Fishing Tournament Can Land Big Catch for Anglers and DMC Students June 8-9

Article by:Melinda Eddleman

That big catch can land anglers the top prize and help Del Mar College (DMC) students at the same time, so grab the bait and get ready to fish for a cause! The College, DMC Foundation and LNV Inc., a local engineering, architecture and surveying company, are partnering once again to host the fifth annual “Stringers for Scholarships” fishing tournament June 8-9 to raise funds for student scholarships.

Our ‘Stringers for Scholarships’ fishing tournament is another way for the College, the Foundation, our partners like LNV Inc. and the community to come together to help Del Mar students by raising scholarship funds. Area anglers can fish for a good cause, have fun and know they’re helping our students attain their goals through education and much needed scholarship funds. This annual fishing event is a winning combination for everyone!
Mary McQueen, Executive Director of Development/DMC Foundation

In 2017, the DMC Foundation awarded $1.6 million in scholarships to over 1,500 students.

The two-day event opens with a Captain’s Party from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 8, at Marker 37 (13317 South Padre Island Drive) with food, drinks and a sneak peek at raffle items. At least one team member must attend this event to pick up packets with tournament rules, goodie bags and other items. New this year, the party will include a Calcutta-style auction. Don’t know what that is? Register a fishing team and find out!

The tournament includes guided and non-guided divisions.

Fishing runs from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 9. Angler weigh-in is between 1 and 3 p.m., and contestants must be in line by 3 p.m. to get their fish weighed.

Individual awards for first, second and third place will be given for the following categories: heaviest single speckled trout, heaviest single redfish and heaviest flounder. A single team award will be given for the heaviest stringer not to exceed two trout, one redfish and one flounder. The event also features side pot payouts for an additional fee at registration.
