The deal is sealed … DMC, TAMUK expand educational opportunities for Coastal Bend students by signing Memorandum of Agreement

Joint admissions, reverse transferability and non-academic consortium for resource accessibility define three key areas of MOA

Article by Melinda Eddleman

Today, May 12, marks a new era in how Del Mar College (DMC) and Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) are partnered to benefit students attending both institutions. The impact is tremendous with the expansion of educational opportunities for Coastal Bend and South Texas students.

Leadership at DMC and TAMUK signed a five-year Memorandum of Agreement, or MOA, that will accomplish three things, including establishing 1) a Joint Admissions Program, 2) Reverse Transfer and 3) a Non-Academic Consortium Agreements.

The MOA takes effect beginning this fall.

The memorandum of agreement we’re signing today is a great example of partners working together to meet the needs of those we serve. And, the five-year agreement is an expansion of an already productive relationship between Del Mar College and Texas A&M-Kingsville. Our mutual goal is to provide our students access to all the resources and services they need to be successful.
Dr. Mark Escamilla, Del Mar College President and Chief Executive Officer
From the university’s perspective, the Joint Admissions Program will benefit not only students but also communities throughout the region. The program will provide a more seamless and less complicated pathway for those students who choose to continue their education at TAMUK.
Dr. Mark Hussey, President of Texas A&M University-Kingsville

The Joint Admissions Program will allow students to identify themselves as a student at both institutions with access to facilities and programs offered by both DMC and TAMUK. This MOA component can enhance the student experience and provide for seamless transition between the two institutions, including but not limited to:

  • concurrent enrollment,
  • TAMUK and DMC email accounts, and
  • access to TAMUK and DMC libraries online and to computer facilitates operated by both institutions.

Reverse Transfer permits students who have matriculated to TAMUK prior to completing their associate’s degree at DMC to transfer coursework from the university back to the college to complete their DMC degree program. Students interested in furthering their undergraduate degree or pursuing advanced degree options may find this MOA component advantageous, especially since a completed associate’s degree can become a valuable indicator of their marketability and success.

Students will also benefit from Non-Academic Consortium Agreements with DMC and TAMUK departments or offices––Financial Aid, Admissions, Distance Education and Career Services––exploring opportunities and developing consortium agreements that facilitate transfer, reverse transfer, concurrent enrollment and other future partnership areas that expand access to higher education and students’ success at both institutions.
