Variety of fun activities scheduled for National Library Week, April 9-12

Article by: Michael Bratten

Giant Jenga may not be your idea of a typical library activity, but it’s one of several outside-the-box festivities scheduled during National Library Week at Del Mar College’s (DMC) libraries from Monday, April 9 to Thursday, April 12.

“We’re very happy to celebrate National Library Week with a variety of open house activities,” said Cody Gregg, DMC dean of Learning Resources. “We want to spotlight the vital role libraries play in student success and the myriad of services we offer to students and the community. Libraries are not just warehouses for books; they are vital, bustling hubs for collaboration, study and learning.”

A planning committee was formed to develop fun activities for the week, which include a poetry open mic night, adult coloring, board games, video games and scavenger hunts. Organizers hope that the games help students relax and de-stress as they begin focusing on mid-term exams, papers and projects, Gregg said.

Because the Del Mar College mission encompasses serving our community, we encourage members of the public to help us celebrate National Library Week.
Cody Gregg, Dean of Learning Resources

Activities will be held at the William F. White, Jr. Library on DMC’s East Campus and the Howard E. Barth Learning Resources Center on the West Campus.

Besides a traditional scavenger hunt, there will be a “cyberhunt” that’s designed to familiarize DMC students with Canvas, the College’s learning management system. Winners of the cyberhunt and scavenger hunt will receive a DMC backpack stuffed with College goodies and a $25 gift certificate to the DMC bookstore.

Except for the cyberhunt, all the activities are open to the community.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of National Library Week, according to the American Library Association website (www.ala.org). The national event is themed “Libraries Lead,” and the 2018 National Library Week Honorary Chair is American Ballet Theatre dancer and author Misty Copeland.
